How to Ace a Nanny Interview During COVID 19

Interviewing for a nanny position can be little frightening, but there is nothing to fear when you know how to pass the test. After 30 years of referring nannies to families, we have learned and heard all the tips to acing an interview.

Families are going to want to spend a good amount of time during your interview, so do not plan anything after your interview if you can help it.  Plan to spend at least an hour or two with the family.

The first impression always counts, so make a good impression when you greet them at the door.

1). During this COVID 19 pandemic, wear a mask. This is not the time to be political.

2). Before the pandemic, we use to say, greet the family and children with a huge, beautiful smile – and you still can. Smile with your mask on, and your smile will shine through your eyes. Although it is not proper to extend your hand for a handshake, wear plastic gloves and offer a ‘elbow touch’ handshake, or just wave hello. We have a lot more tips about this topic at Childcare Resources.

3). Arrive on time and make sure you say “Hello,” and your name, and that you at there for the interview. If you are working with a nanny agency, the staff will probably coordinate the interview.

4). Parents are going to introduce you to their child or children when you greet them.  This is going to be the first test to make them feel welcomed. As soon as you see the child or kids give them a happy greeting. You may want to stoop down and give them a polite hug (with your mask on).

5). When the parent invites you to sit down, they are going to ask you open-ended questions such as:

  • “Tell me about yourself”. This question will give you a chance to tell them about your background and your family, so they can learn more about you. Practice answering this question before the interview so you can calm down any jittery nerves. Let your see their personality shine through your response.

If they family offer you a beverage, ask for a bottle of water. NEVER accept an alcoholic beverage during a nanny interview! If you do, you maybe pre-judged as an employee who may drink on the job.

  • If they family ask you: “Why do you want to work as a nanny?” Be honest and tell them, but try to come up with a better answer than: “Because I like children.” Because they may ask you: “Why not work in a day care center?” so be prepared to ask that question too. There is no wrong or right answer, but certain questions can project your personality, so practice the answers to your questions in advance.
  • Pay attention to your body language and facial expressions. They are going to be watching your every move to see if you are nervous or feel comfortable around them and their child. Ask your own questions (with a smile), and write your answers down in a notepad (and not a cell phone) because it is more professional.

At Childcare Resources, we have plenty of interviewing techniques and skills to improve your chances of being hired with the best family who will appreciate you.
